Preparing your design
Last updated October 11, 2026
File types and sizes
- Images: PNG or JPEG, up to 100 MB and 80 megapixels.
- Fonts for text you add in the editor: TTF, OTF, WOFF or WOFF2, up to 10 MB. Fonts stay in your browser.
Your files stay in your browser while you design. They are uploaded only when you add the product to your cart, to make your order.
Resolution
For the size you choose, the editor shows the recommended pixels for a sharp print and rates your image against them: open Advanced tools under the editor and look under Print readouts. Aim for the recommended pixels or more. As a rule of thumb, multiply the print size in inches by the resolution: at 150 dpi a 12×18 in print needs 1800×2700 pixels, and at 300 dpi it needs twice that in each direction.
Enlarging a small image does not add detail. If the editor rates your image low for the size you want, choose a smaller size or start from a larger original.
Transparent backgrounds
A PNG with a transparent background prints only the design, with the product showing around it. That matters most on apparel and colored products: a JPEG always has a background, and it prints as a rectangle. The editor's Remove background tool can clear a plain background of one color.
On garments printed by heat transfer, a white base layer goes under your design, so colors stay true on dark fabric.
Placing the design
- The guide in the editor marks the printable area; it is not printed. Keep text and faces a little inside it.
- For prints that cover the whole product, such as blankets, flags and canvas, fill the area so no blank edge shows.
- Photos from phones print the right way up.
What the preview shows
The preview is drawn the same way your print is laid out, so the design lands where you placed it. Screens differ in color and brightness, so colors on the product can look slightly different from your display.
Going further
The guides go into the details: how many pixels a photo needs at each size, when a transparent PNG matters, and which print method each product gets.
Common questions
What file types can I upload?
PNG or JPEG images up to 100 MB. Fonts for text you add in the editor can be TTF, OTF, WOFF or WOFF2.
How many pixels does my photo need?
Multiply the print size in inches by the resolution: at 150 dpi a 12×18 in print needs 1800×2700 pixels, and at 300 dpi twice that in each direction. The editor shows the recommended pixels for the size you choose and rates your image against them.
Do I need a transparent background?
On apparel and colored products, yes: a PNG with a transparent background prints only the design, while a JPEG prints as a rectangle with its background. The editor's Remove background tool can clear a plain background of one color.
Is the preview what I will receive?
The preview is drawn the same way your print is laid out, so the design lands where you placed it. Colors on the product can differ slightly from your screen, which varies in color and brightness.
Are my files uploaded while I design?
No. Your images, fonts and placements stay in your browser while you design. The design file is uploaded only when you add the product to your cart.
